CIMG8245 Mayan ball court in Chichen Itza
CIMG8245 The ball court at the ancient Mayan site Chichen Itza
This is the wall of the court where the ceremonial ball game was played. “Ceremonial” as in, at the end of the game one of the players was sacrificed to the gods.
S and I could not agree if the guide said a player from the losing or the winning team was sacrificed. I thought that logically it should be a player from the losing team. However, S thought that since being sacrificed to the gods was a great honor, that honor fell to one of the winners!
This is one of the series of my photos from a Gulf of Mexico / Caribbean cruise I went on in November of 2007. Our ship was named Ecstasy. It sailed from Galveston TX, to Cozumel and Progresso (Mexico) and back. From Progresso we took a tour bus to an ancient archeological site, Chichen Itza, to see Mayan pyramids.
